Foul & Surface Water Drainage Survey
Otterbourne
Winchester
Project Overview
Clearline Drainage was commissioned to carry out a detailed CCTV investigation of the foul and surface water drainage serving a residential property in Otterbourne, Hampshire.
The purpose of the survey was to establish the layout, connectivity and condition of the drainage system, including locating accessible chambers, tracing pipe runs and identifying any structural or service defects.
Approximately 70.8m of drainage was surveyed, comprising around 63m of foul drainage and 7.8m of surface water pipework.
Our Approach
We located and opened accessible manholes, gullies and inspection chambers across the property before carrying out CCTV inspections of the available foul and surface water runs.
The systems were traced and mapped to establish their layout, connectivity and direction of flow, including two internal soil vent pipe connections and the foul mainline extending beyond the property boundary.
Pipe materials, diameters and defects were recorded in accordance with MSCC5 using SRM5 scoring. The completed drainage layout was then overlaid onto the client’s CAD drawing, giving a clear spatial record of the surveyed foul and surface water systems alongside the existing site information.
What We Found
The majority of the drainage was found to be in good structural condition.
The foul system was predominantly constructed from 100mm uPVC, with the mainline successfully traced from the property to a connection approximately 20m beyond the site boundary. No significant defects were identified along the main foul run or the surveyed surface water drainage.
One significant defect was identified on a branch from FMH1. At approximately 3.97m, the pipe was found to be broken and deformed/squashed, preventing the camera from continuing and meaning the connection beyond this point could not be confirmed.
No other significant structural defects were identified within the surveyed drainage.
Outcome
The survey provided a clear understanding of both the foul and surface water drainage arrangements across the property and confirmed that the system was generally in sound condition.
By tracing the system and overlaying the drainage map onto the CAD drawing, the client was provided with a clear record of the drainage layout, connections and route across the site.
Rather than requiring widespread remedial works, the investigation isolated the problem to a single defective lateral, allowing repairs to be targeted precisely.
Clearline recommended a localised excavation and repair at approximately 3.97m to replace the broken and deformed section, while the remainder of the surveyed drainage required no significant structural intervention.
